Why Pure Water Price Will Rise, Producers Give Notice

The Association of Table Waters Producers (ATWAP) has raised concerns over the looming possibility of a significant price hike for pure water, citing mounting production expenses as the primary factor.

During a press conference held in Lagos, representatives of ATWAP highlighted several challenges plaguing the industry, including exorbitant costs of diesel, erratic power supply, and escalating production expenses. They emphasized that the current pricing of water sales reflects the harsh economic realities facing the country.

Expressing their predicament, a spokesperson for the group stated, “Pure water is currently priced at N50, but there’s a likelihood of it reaching N100 per sachet. We are grappling with soaring production costs beyond our control.”

The spokesperson further elaborated on the escalating costs, noting, “Last year, we procured materials (nylon) at N1,100 per KG, whereas today, the same 6 kg of nylon costs between N3,600 and N3,700. Additionally, treatment expenses have surged. These material price hikes occur as frequently as thrice weekly, making it challenging for us to absorb the rising costs.”

Highlighting the financial strain on water producers, the spokesperson emphasized the industry’s reliance on personal funds or borrowed capital for sustenance. They lamented the reluctance of banks to extend loans to pure water producers, exacerbating the industry’s financial woes.

In light of these challenges, the association appealed to consumers for understanding and patience, expressing their desire to keep water prices accessible. “We urge Nigerians to bear with us as we navigate these turbulent times. It is our aim to ensure that water remains affordable, with our ultimate goal being to prevent the price per sachet from exceeding N20. The escalating production costs, coupled with diesel prices, have placed immense pressure on our operations,” the spokesperson concluded
