Hardship: Family Hospitalized After Consuming Cassava Peel In Oyo
Amidst the prevailing economic challenges gripping Nigeria, a family of six found themselves hospitalized after consuming a meal of ‘Amala’ made from cassava peels. The incident occurred in Ogbomoso South/Ogo Oluwa Local Government area of Oyo State, resulting in the loss of one family member’s life.
According to reports by Vanguard, the family, desperate to alleviate their hunger, resorted to preparing ‘Amala’ from cassava peels. However, shortly after consuming the meal, they began experiencing severe abdominal pain, prompting concerned neighbors to rush them to the nearby Ogo Oluwa Hospital.
Upon assessment, the seriousness of their condition necessitated their urgent transfer to the Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso. Tragically, one of the family members, a granddaughter, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The remaining five family members, including the mother, Mrs. Victoria Adewole, were admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where they continue to battle for their lives. It was revealed that the family had ground cassava peels into flour as a substitute for yam or cassava flour, due to their inability to afford it.
The use of cassava peels, known to be potentially toxic, likely led to complications that resulted in the tragic loss of life and the hospitalization of the remaining family members. The Chief Medical Director of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Prof. Olawale Olakulehin, confirmed the incident, stating that four of the five hospitalized individuals are in stable condition, while one remains in critical condition
