New Twist To Looting Of Abuja Warehouse As NEMA Reacts
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has refuted claims that the warehouse looted in Abuja on Sunday belonged to them, as initially reported in certain media outlets. Earlier reports suggested that residents had raided a warehouse believed to be owned by NEMA in the Gwagwa area of the FCT, seizing food items amidst the prevailing economic challenges.
According to witnesses, youths broke into the warehouse in the Tasha area around 7 am, making off with bags of maize and other grains. The looting continued unabated until 9 am, with residents from neighboring Jiwa and Karmo joining in.
Jaafar Aminu, a resident, described how the situation led to a traffic standstill on the Gwagwa-Karmo road, affecting routes to Dei-Dei and Jabi. However, NEMA spokesperson Ezekiel Manzo clarified in a statement, “the attention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been drawn to media reports alleging that the Agency’s warehouse was looted by some hoodlums in Abuja.”
Manzo emphasized, “This is to clarify that the looted warehouse does not belong to NEMA. However, the agency sympathizes with owners of the looted facility.” He also stated, “To forestall any security breach at NEMA facilities, the Director General, Mustapha Ahmed, has directed zonal directors and heads of operations to strengthen security in and around the Agency’s offices and warehouses nationwide.”
