In an emotional video trending online, Chioma Okoli, the embattled Erisco Tomatoe paste reviewer has alleged that the President of Erisco foods, Chief Eric Umeofia, verbally abused her and threatened that he would kidnapp and kill her.

Recall that in October 2023, the police arrested Chioma following complaints by Erisco Foods Limited, Lagos that her post about the company’s product, Nagiko Tomato Paste, was damaging.

Chioma, in a September 17, 2023 post, claimed that a tomato paste she bought in a market tasted sugary.

According to her post, she had gone to the market on September 16, with the intention of buying Gino or Sonia brand of tomato paste but could not find both, adding that she later bought the Nagiko Tomato Paste, made by Erisco which she had planned to use in making stew.

“When I opened it, I decided to taste it, Omo! Sugar is just too much!” she wrote.

She subsequently urged other Facebook users to confirm if they had used the product before, apparently to ascertain if they had similar experiences.

In the viral video which was posted on X  by an X user with the identity, Dr. Penking, Chioma recounted her experience in her first meeting with Mr Eric, saying, “Immediately Mr Erickson saw me he said, ‘So it’s you? Small rat like you. It’s you that want to bring down the business I did for seven years?’ She added that he said, “if not because of anything, he would just kidnap me, kill me and nothing would happen.

“He made this statement like four times right there at the police headquarters. Immediately he said that I said, I would have died, so this man would have killed me and nothing would happen.”

Chioma also cried that she was compelled under duress to write the apology letter she wrote to Erisco. She said she was asked to write in the apology letter, “Stating that I lied and I am guilty of defamation of product.”

“I would write an apology letter and post it in a newspaper and make a bank draft of 5 billion naira, I acknowledged it and showed it to my husband. It was written and I was asked to recopy with my writing.”

While a section of Netizens on X view Chioma’s post as damaging to the business of the said CEO, many are advocating for justice for her, maintaining that allowing the case to slide is a damage to Freedom of speech.

However, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court has fixed April 18, 2024, for the next hearing of Mrs Chioma Okoli’s case against Erisco Tomatoe paste.

The judge fixed the date after failed attempts by lawyers representing parties to move their separate applications regarding the suit.

Chioma’s arraignment has suffered several setbacks for months, owing to the failure of the police to serve her with court documents.
