Former ‘Powerful’ Governor Among 4,412 New Lawyers Admitted To Nigerian Bar
On Tuesday, a significant milestone was marked in Nigeria as a total of 4,412 new lawyers were admitted into the Nigerian Bar. Among the fresh faces entering the legal arena was Chief Rotimi Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation.
During the swearing-in ceremony, chaired by the esteemed retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Mary Peter-Odili, the newly minted lawyers were reminded of their duty to uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethics in their practice. Justice Peter-Odili emphasized the importance of avoiding corruption and behaviors that could tarnish the judiciary’s reputation.
Addressing the newly admitted lawyers, Justice Peter-Odili stressed the noble nature of the legal profession, where every individual holds significance. She urged them to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations governing the profession, emphasizing the weight of responsibility that comes with being a member of the legal community.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the legal system, Justice Peter-Odili highlighted the need for consistency and discipline within the judiciary. She acknowledged the existence of conflicting judgments and indiscipline among lawyers, which have contributed to a decline in public confidence in the legal system.
To address these challenges, the Body of Benchers has established a committee composed of esteemed members of the legal profession. This committee is tasked with devising strategies to mitigate conflicting judgments and enhance the integrity of the legal system.
In his remarks, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, provided insights into the rigorous process that led to the admission of the new lawyers. He revealed that the successful candidates had undergone rigorous examinations supervised by the Council of Legal Education, with 251 candidates achieving first-class honors.
Prof. Chiroma reaffirmed the Law School’s commitment to maintaining the high standards and integrity of the legal profession, emphasizing its role as the guardian of legal excellence.
