Finally, Lawmakers Set To Impeach Shaibu – Report

The political atmosphere in Edo State was charged on Wednesday morning following reports of alleged plans to commence the impeachment of the deputy governor of the state, Hon Philip Shaibu.

Sources disclosed that at least 22 of the 24 members of the House of Assembly were said to have appended their signatures to the impeachment notice articulated against Shaibu.

The impeachment move follows the sharp disagreement between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Shaibu over the Edo 2024 election.

A news website, The Conclave reported that the proceedings may begin as early as Wednesday following the mobilization of the lawmakers by the executive branch of government.

Specific details on the article of impeachment are, however, not available.

According to the report the House had reportedly made arrangements to have the session broadcast live as a way of showcasing to the world that it was a transparent process.

According to The Conclave, one of the lawmakers hinted that the State Executive paid NTA for live coverage of Shaibu’s planned impeachment and eventual removal.

He also said that 22 lawmakers out of the 24 had signed the impeachment notice, after allegedly collecting the cash sum of N15m each.

GWG.ng reports that the expected impeachment proceeding follows the face-off between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Shaibu over the succession in 2024.
