Stop Dumping Dead Babies In Waste Bins, Ogun Govt Warns

The Ogun State Government is gravely concerned about a disturbing trend in Abeokuta, the state capital: the disposal of dead babies in public waste bins. Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, highlighted this alarming issue during a press conference on March 6th, 2024.

The Ogun official revealed how waste bins, meant for collecting refuse along major roads, were being misused by residents to discard not only faeces but tragically, deceased babies as well. This practice is not only a significant health hazard but also reflects deeper societal issues that demand immediate attention and comprehensive intervention.

In response to this problem and other sanitation concerns like open defecation, the Ogun State Government is taking proactive steps to improve the safety and cleanliness of public spaces, notably the Pansheke pedestrian bridge. The bridge, designed to facilitate safe pedestrian crossing, has been compromised by the presence of beggars and robbers, particularly at night.

To address this, the government plans to install gates on the bridge, which will be locked at 6 pm daily to prevent misuse by destitute individuals and criminals during nighttime hours. These measures form part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing sanitation and securing public areas for the welfare of residents.

By tackling these critical issues, the government seeks to create a cleaner, safer, and more dignified environment for all inhabitants of Abeokuta. Commissioner Oresanya’s call to action underscores the urgency of the situation and the government’s unwavering commitment to finding solutions, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in achieving these goals.
