El-Rufai Jnr Rebuked Over Claims On Imported SUVs For Reps
On a podcast program hosted by Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television titled ‘MIC ON,’ Honorable Bello El-Rufai, representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, adamantly refuted claims of receiving an official SUV allocated to members of the House of Representatives.
His denial, aired on the podcast, triggered a significant backlash and raised doubts about the transparency of vehicle allocations within the legislative body.
Following El-Rufai’s denial, an internal memo dated March 13th, 2024, surfaced, authored by Honorable Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson for the House of Representatives. This memo aimed to clarify the situation and admonish El-Rufai for his statements. It unequivocally stated that every member of the 10th House of Representatives had indeed received their allocated vehicle, directly contradicting El-Rufai’s claims.
The memo emphasized that these vehicles were the property of the House of Representatives and were intended to assist members in the effective discharge of their duties. It cautioned Honorable El-Rufai against grandstanding or pontificating on contentious matters in a manner that could tarnish the image of the parliament.
Moreover, the memo highlighted the importance of maintaining the trust of Nigerians in the 10th House of Representatives and urged members to exercise caution in public discourse, particularly on controversial matters. It reminded all honorable members of their responsibility to avoid causing disaffection and raising controversial issues that could lead to public ridicule or damage the reputation of the parliament.
The incident raised questions about transparency and accountability within the Nigerian House of Representatives and cast doubt on the integrity of its members. The internal memo, titled ‘Clarification on Vehicle Allocation,’ refuted El-Rufai’s claims, emphasizing that all members had received their allocated vehicles. It urged Honorable El-Rufai to refrain from disseminating misinformation and cautioned against actions that could subject colleagues to public ridicule.
