In a significant move to ensure consumer rights in the digital age, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) celebrated the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day with a focus on “Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Consumer.”

The event, held at the NCC headquarters in Abuja, featured key insights on the intersection of AI and consumer protection.

Delivering a speech on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, who was unavoidably absent, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services Designate, highlighted the importance of AI in modern society. Dr. Maida emphasized that while AI has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, it also brings significant ethical challenges, particularly concerning fairness, privacy, and transparency.

He stressed the NCC’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights, aligning with global trends, and ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly. The NCC has implemented several consumer-centric initiatives, such as the Consumer Complaints Management system, the Toll-Free Line 622, and the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) Code 2442, to enhance consumer protection.

Dr. Maida further noted that the rapid advancement of AI requires robust regulatory frameworks to balance innovation with consumer safety. He called for collaboration between academia, industry, government, and society to address the complex legal and ethical issues surrounding AI.

As Nigeria continues to integrate AI into its telecommunications infrastructure, the NCC affirmed its dedication to protecting, informing, and educating consumers, ensuring that AI advancements contribute positively to society while upholding fundamental rights. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the NCC’s commitment to consumer rights as a core aspect of its mandate.
