2024: Your Ambition Will kill Ondo South’s Interest; Youths Tell Aiyedatiwa
The Ondo South Youths Forum (OSYF) in Ondo state has raised concerns over Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s gubernatorial ambition, fearing it could deprive them of eight years of governance and undermine their interests.
They pointed out that, according to a Supreme Court ruling, Aiyedatiwa is only permitted to serve one more term, having been sworn in on December 27, 2023, following the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. This limitation, they argue, necessitates careful consideration in selecting a candidate who can legally serve two terms.
Coordinator Barrister Kingsley Omogbehin urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu to avoid considering Aiyedatiwa as a candidate. He emphasized the importance of choosing someone from the southern senatorial district who can fulfill the legal requirement of serving eight years in office. Omogbehin called on Aiyedatiwa to withdraw his gubernatorial ambition and throw his support behind aspirants from the southern district, such as Dr. Paul Akintelure and Chief Olusola Oke, SAN, among others.
The group questioned Aiyedatiwa’s increasing popularity in Ondo Central while major stakeholders in the southern senatorial district remain hesitant to align with him. They expressed concerns that supporting Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy would result in the south being deprived of eight years of governance, ultimately benefiting Ondo Central instead. Omogbehin highlighted previous support for Governor Akeredolu, emphasizing the need to select a candidate capable of securing significant votes from Ondo South in an election.
Despite Aiyedatiwa’s backing from certain quarters, the group emphasized that prominent leaders from Ondo South are not supporting his ambition. They cautioned that even voters from Ilaje, Aiyedatiwa’s hometown, would not endorse him due to the perceived risks his ambition poses to the region’s future. Omogbehin stressed the importance of prioritizing the region’s interests over personal ambitions, urging Aiyedatiwa to step back from the gubernatorial race for the sake of Ondo South’s representation and governance continuity.
In conclusion, Omogbehin reiterated the group’s support for a candidate from the southern senatorial district who can legally serve two terms in office. He urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to abandon his gubernatorial ambition and sacrifice it for the sake of the people’s interests. The OSYF’s stance underscores the importance of selecting a candidate capable of ensuring the south’s rightful representation and governance continuity, despite the challenges and complexities surrounding the electoral process.
