Dutse Varsity Grinds To Halt As NASUU Commences Warning Strike
Academic and administrative operations ground to a halt at the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASUU) commenced a nationwide seven-day warning strike on Monday. This action stemmed from the non-payment of their four-month salaries, leaving the university’s vice chancellor, Professor Sabo Abdul Karim, along with senior administrative staff, lecturers, and students stranded for hours as all entrance gates were locked due to the strike.
Despite some students and lecturers being permitted entry through the pedestrian gate, academic activities came to a standstill, with some lecturers forced to suspend their classes due to the tense atmosphere. NASUU’s FUD branch chairman, Comrade Alhassan Abdullahi, explained to reporters that their participation in the nationwide strike was in response to the federal government’s failure to address their demands, particularly regarding the payment of outstanding salaries from August to December 2023.
Abdullahi emphasized that numerous letters and discussions had been initiated with federal government representatives concerning the salary arrears, yet no positive outcome had materialized thus far. He clarified that the warning strike was not intended to disrupt operations or destabilize the educational sector but rather to convey their grievances to the federal government effectively.
Following the conclusion of the seven-day warning strike, NASUU FUD will consider further action based on the government’s response. Comrade Abdullahi underscored their readiness to adhere to directives issued by their national headquarters should the government fail to address their concerns adequately.
The strike underscores the growing frustration among NASUU members nationwide over salary arrears, highlighting the need for prompt resolution to avoid further disruptions in academic institutions across the country.
