Some worshippers narrowly escaped death on Sunday when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) intended to attack them detonated prematurely on a male suicide bomber en route to carry out the deadly mission.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, revealing that the attempted suicide bombing took place in Biu Local Government Area.

Apart from the would-be attacker, two bystanders suffered injuries during the failed suicide attempt.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Daso Nahum, affirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, shedding light on the sequence of events.

Nahum recounted that the incident unfolded around 8 pm on Sunday while Muslim worshippers were engaged in night prayers.

“Two passersby who sustained injuries from the explosion were promptly rushed to a hospital for medical attention,” the police spokesperson stated.

In response to the alarming occurrence, Nahum disclosed that security personnel were swiftly dispatched to the scene to restore order and assess the situation.

He emphasized the critical importance of remaining vigilant, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, when late-night prayers are common among Muslim communities.

Nahum urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities promptly to law enforcement agencies, underscoring the collective responsibility in maintaining community safety and security.
