In a disturbing incident at Gujarat University in western India, five individuals have been apprehended following the assault on international students during Ramadan prayers. Reports from BBC indicate that a dispute erupted on Saturday, March 16, concerning the location of the prayer within the university hostel.

According to police sources, a confrontation ensued, resulting in injuries to five students. India’s foreign ministry has condemned the incident, affirming that strict measures are being taken by the Gujarat government against the perpetrators.

Police Commissioner GS Malik revealed that a group of approximately two dozen individuals entered the hostel premises on Saturday night, objecting to the students’ prayer arrangements and demanding they relocate to a mosque. Tensions escalated, leading to physical assaults, stone-throwing, and vandalism of property.

The arrested individuals were identified as Hitesh Mewada, Bharat Patel, Shitij Pandey, Jitendra Patel, and Sunil Dudhirua, with further arrests anticipated.

Eyewitness accounts and online videos depict a mob chanting Hindu religious slogans while attacking students and causing damage to property. Three injured students have been discharged from the hospital, while two others remain in stable condition.

Narrating the ordeal, student Navid Siddique described how the situation escalated from verbal confrontation to a violent assault, leaving students fearing for their safety. Another student, Noman, expressed concern over recurring incidents targeting international students, highlighting the risks they face.

The injured students, recipients of scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, were part of a federal government-backed initiative to promote cultural exchange.

Reacting to the incident, Gujarat University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Neerja A Gupta acknowledged longstanding tensions between foreign students and assailants. She assured reporters of plans to relocate international students to hostels with enhanced security measures and amenities.
