Knocks, Kudos As Former Atiku Man Turned Tinubu Clapper Hails New Naira Gains

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has hailed the ascent of the naira attributing it to deliberate strategies by the Bola Tinubu administration aimed at salvaging a bad situation.

Omokri who served in the Goodluck Jonathan administration and controversially hailed Peter Obi as one of the best presidential hopefuls in Nigeria prior to 2019 was a well-known associate of Atiku Abubakar in the days leading to the 2023 presidential election.

However, following the election he has been strident in canvassing support for President Tinubu and been equally severe in condemnation of his critics and notably, Peter Obi.

In that regard as news of the gain by the naira emerged on Wednesday with the currency attaining N1,400 to the dollar, Reno Omokri took to his X handle to hail the Tinubu administration’s efforts.

He said:

The appreciation of the Naira from ₦1590 to $1 yesterday to ₦1400 to $1 today is a big deal. Nigerians must understand that the Naira you are seeing today is not the same Naira Tinubu met. Tinubu met an artificial Naira that was being subsidised at the rate of $1.5 billion every month. It was bankrupting Nigeria.

By floating it, he made the right decision for Nigeria. He risked being unpopular to do the right thing. He knew his political opponents, who also promised to float the Naira, would use it against him. He knew that opposition-linked media, like Arise TV, would use it to turn the public against him. But he still did it. That is courage.

Now, it is our collective consumption habits that drive the value of the Naira. Celebrate this progress. It is a gradual process. With #GrowNairaBuyNaija, Nigeria is getting better!

However, the submission by Reno Omokri on the naira was met with mixed reactions.
