Binance Executive Appears in Court For Tax Evasion Charges
Head of Financial Crime Compliance, in Binance Tigran Gambaryan, made an appearance before the Federal High Court in Abuja to address allegations of tax evasion, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal saga involving the cryptocurrency exchange.
Accompanied by officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gambaryan arrived at the court premises clad in a black T-shirt and green pants, ready to confront the charges brought against him.
The case, registered as FHC/ABJ/CR/115/2024, accuses Binance of failing to register with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and meet its tax obligations. Alongside Gambaryan, Nadeem Anjarwalla, Binance’s Regional Manager for Africa, is implicated in the alleged offenses.
Anjarwalla, who fled custody, remains at large, adding further intrigue to the unfolding legal proceedings. However, Gambaryan and Binance are expected to be formally arraigned by the Federal Government on charges related to tax evasion and money laundering.
GWG.ng reports that the detention of Gambaryan and Anjarwalla by Nigerian authorities on February 28 sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community, with observers closely monitoring the implications for Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.
As the case progresses, stakeholders await the outcome of the arraignment and the potential ramifications for Binance’s operations in Nigeria and beyond.
