Lagos Police Respond To Viral Video Of Officers Demanding Drone Permit
Following the circulation of a viral video, which was also reported by GWG.ng showing police officers requesting a drone permit from an individual operating a drone on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the Lagos State Police Command has issued a statement clarifying their actions.
According to the statement, the officers were acting within the bounds of the law, as Nigerian aviation regulations mandate the acquisition of a permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for the operation of drones weighing over 250 grams.
However, the Command condemned the unprofessional behavior displayed by the officers in attempting to extort the drone operator, as evident in the concluding part of the video.
In response to this misconduct, Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni, has directed the Commanding Officer of 49 PMF Akodo, where the officers were posted, to produce them for appropriate disciplinary measures.
The statement reaffirms the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to upholding professionalism and ensuring that officers operate within the confines of the law while maintaining integrity in their duties especially on the use of the drone.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, issued the statement on April 6, 2024, emphasizing the Command’s dedication to maintaining public trust and accountability.
