Revealed: How Plot To Remove Fubara Last September Sparked Rivers Crisis
By GWG Political Editor
Erstwhile managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mrs Ibim Semenitari has opened up on how the plot to remove Governor Simi Fubara within four months of his inauguration as governor of Rivers State fueled the crisis between him and his erstwhile political benefactor, Nyesom Wike.
Mrs Semenitari, a former commissioner for information in the state in an interview, however, commended Governor Fubara for remaining focused despite repeated attempts to lure him into battle.
“It is clear that there is an attempt to force him into a battle as it were. I am glad that he has continued to maintain a clear stance in leadership,” she said in an interview with Channels Television monitored by GWG.ng
Waxing biblical, Mrs Semenitari drew a parallel with the two women who contested over a surviving baby before King Solomon of Israel and the determination of the real mother not to destroy the baby.
“We have a governor who knows that he was elected and holds the mandate of Rivers State and he will not destroy Rivers State even when he is pushed to the wall.
“As a stakeholder in Rivers State, I certainly don’t want a breakdown of law and order and I am glad that I have a governor who is consistent with his determination not to allow the breakdown of law and order.
Noting what she said was the plot to remove Fubara from office within four months of his assumption of office, she said:
“It is unfortunate that anyone started trying to get a governor out barely four months after the man took the oath of office. It is ridiculous. Who does that? It has never happened anywhere else and I think that is part of the problem,” Mrs Semenitari said of the plot that would have removed Fubara as governor last September.
“I think it is a good thing to see someone who has power and can use it but doesn’t want to overturn the applecart,” she said as she again turned to the Bible to make a comparison with Jesus who refused to draw down fire on those who were against his passage through Samaria.
Asked on the issues raised against the governor by the State House of Assembly, the former commissioner raised her poser as to the legal status of the members following their defection.
“The question I have with this is whether constitutionally whether they can actually call themselves Assembly members and I don’t want to be in breach of the constitution.”
“I am not a lawyer but I think the Supreme Court just told us in the case of Cross River State that if you are elected under PDP you cannot move to APC and continue to call yourself a legislator. So, I would rather not talk as the status is still uncertain.”
GWG.ng reports that Mrs Semenitari in her responses, however, did not mention Wike, the immediate past governor of the state by name.
