Unprecedented Flood Hits UAE After Unprecedented Rain (Video)

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced a catastrophic flood on Tuesday, April 16, following an astonishing deluge that saw the main city, Dubai receive an entire two-year amount of rainfall within a mere 24 hours.

Dubai Meteorological Office reported an astounding 6.26 inches of rain between 10 p.m. local time Monday and 10 p.m. local time Tuesday, marking a historic event for the region. The National Centre of Meteorology corroborated these figures, warning of further rainfall in the imminent hours.

The aftermath of the downpour saw streets transformed into vast ponds, while disruptive winds led to flight diversions at Dubai International Airport, a global aviation hub and home to Emirates, the leading long-haul carrier.

As a result of the adverse weather conditions, inbound flights to Dubai International Airport were temporarily diverted on Tuesday evening, while departures remained unaffected, according to airport authorities.

To ensure safety amidst the unprecedented weather, all Dubai government entities and private schools were instructed to switch to remote work arrangements for the day.

While rain is a rarity in the UAE, occasional showers occur during the cooler winter months. However, the lack of regular rainfall has left many roads and areas without adequate drainage systems, exacerbating the flooding.

The impact of the storm extended beyond the UAE, with rainfall also reported in neighbouring countries including Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Oman faced the brunt of the extreme weather, with at least 18 fatalities reported in recent days due to heavy rains, according to the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management.
