Southeast PDP Meltdown Begins As Ihedioha Resigns

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) beginning what credible sources say is the beginning of the meltdown of the party in the Southeast.

The development GWG.ng gathered is expected to be followed with mass resignations and defections in three Southeast states Ebonyi, Enugu and Abia.

The Southeast had until recently been a strong fortress for the PDP until the 2023 General Election when the Peter Obi phenomenon swept the party to a second player or third player in all but two of the five Southeast states that it not only had full control of.

The party became rudderless after the party jettisoned the expectations of the zone for the presidential ticket in 2023 and its fate was worsened after one of the leading pillars of the party in the zone Chief Olisa Metuh resigned from the party. The national party’s listless efforts towards the fate of Senator Ike Ekweremadu following his incarceration in the United Kingdom also contributed to the detachment of many leading actors towards the party in the zone.

A prominent political actor from the zone speaking to GWG.ng following the announcement by Ihedioha said: “Ihedioha is not the only one going. The whole of Imo is going and Ebonyi and Enugu are to follow soon.”

Ihedioha, a notable associate of Atiku Abubakar has, however, for now left friends and associates in suspense on his next political direction.
In his decision to resign from the PDP he cited the party’s inability to enact internal reforms, enforce its rules, or provide credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He resigned some days after the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, intended to address allegations of anti-party actions during the 2023 elections.

Ihedioha, who served briefly as Imo State governor in 2019 until the Supreme Court overturned his victory, revealed his resignation in a letter addressed to the chairman of the PDP in his Mbutu Ward of Aboh Mbaise local government area in Imo State.

He additionally sent copies of the letter to the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), the acting national chairman of the PDP, and the chairman of the PDP in Imo State.

The letter dated April 23, 2024, and titled “Resignation From The Peoples Democratic Party,” reads: “Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party as one of the founding members. All these years, I have taken pride in the fact that the PDP is a party that will always look inwards for internal reforms and provide credible leadership for the people, whether in power or outside power. I have had the benefit of serving and benefitting from the party at various levels.

“Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Despite my attempt to offer counsel, the party is, sadly no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“It is in the light of the foregoing, that I am compelled to offer my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party effective immediately. While this decision was difficult to take, I, however, believe that it is the right one. Despite this resignation, I will always be available to offer my services towards the deepening of democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
