In a clear disobedience to the order of a Nigerian court of law, Multichoice Nigeria has brazenly hiked the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages.

This move comes despite an interim order from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja, which had restrained the company from effecting the price increase pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Recall that GWG.ng had reported that the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) sitting in Abuja, had on Monday, restrained Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from increasing its subscription tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on May 1.

GWG can confirm that the new prices have taken effect, leaving millions of subscribers with no choice but to pay the increased rates. This development has sparked outrage among customers, who feel betrayed by Multichoice’s disregard for the legal system and its customers’ interests.

The CCPT’s ruling had been hailed as a victory for consumers, who had protested the price hike citing economic hardship and the company’s failure to justify the increase. However, the defiance of the court order by Multichoice raises questions about its commitment to ethical business practices and respect for the law.

As the situation unfolds, GWG.ng will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on any further actions taken by the tribunal or affected customers. For now, DStv and GOtv subscribers are left to bear the brunt of Multichoice’s bold move, which has left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

However, as at the time of compiling this story, Multichoice is yet to release any update or official statement to the court rule.
