In a distressing turn of events, Naziru Idris Yau, a journalist associated with Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV), was struck by a stray bullet in the premises of Government House, Kano

The incident occurred around 6:30 pm on Friday, causing alarm within the media community and raising concerns about journalists’ safety in Nigeria.

Yau received immediate medical attention at the Government House clinic, where it was discovered that he had narrowly escaped a potentially fatal situation.

Despite the seriousness of the injury, medical staff noted that the bullet had not been fired at close range, contributing to his fortunate survival. After treatment, Yau was discharged from the clinic, although shaken by the traumatic ordeal.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with police officers stationed at the government house actively seeking to determine the origin of the stray bullet.

However, the Kano state government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, leaving many unanswered questions.

This unsettling development, coinciding with the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face in Nigeria. It underscores the urgent need for measures to protect media professionals’ rights and safety, enabling them to fulfill their crucial role in society without fear or intimidation.

In a related incident highlighting the challenges journalists encounter, Daniel Ojukwu, a reporter with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), remains in police custody over allegations of “cybercrime.” Ojukwu’s prolonged detention since May 1 highlights the ongoing threats journalists face in upholding press freedom and transparency in Nigeria.
