New Lawmakers Use Ogun To Swear Loyalty To APC, Governor

A viral video has sparked debate and raised eyebrows, showing newly appointed supervisors and advisers in Ikere-Ekiti Local Government Area (LGA) of Ekiti State using the Quran and symbols of the god of Ogun to swear loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, APC and Governor Oyebanji.

The ceremony, which took place at the conference hall of the LGA chairman’s office, featured the appointees swearing allegiance with an ‘Ògún’ totem (a symbol of the Yoruba god of iron) and the Quran.

In the video, the appointees are seen holding a cutlass (representing the ‘Ògún’ totem) in one hand and the Quran in the other, as they repeat an oath of loyalty and truthfulness to the Ekiti State Governor, Deputy Governor, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and its leaders.

The oath, administered by LGA Chairman Olu Adamolekun, includes a peculiar phrase: “If I refuse to do so, Ogun or Quran should kill me.”

This unorthodox oath-taking ceremony has raised questions about the role of traditional beliefs and religious practices in government affairs. Typically, public office holders in Nigeria swear an oath of office using the Quran or Bible, pledging allegiance to the constitution. The incorporation of an ‘Ògún’ totem and a non-traditional oath has sparked controversy and debate among Nigerians.
