Federal High Court Denies Yahaya Bello’s Request To Vacate Arrest Warrant

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s request to vacate the arrest warrant issued against him by the court.

The Judge asserted that Bello, by refusing to make himself available for arraignment in a criminal charge, was in contempt of court and not entitled to any discretion or favor.

In his ruling delivered on Friday regarding Bello’s application to discharge the arrest warrant, the court emphasized that Bello’s continued refusal to appear for arraignment showed a lack of respect for the court. Dismissing the request for lack of merit, the court stated that Bello couldn’t dictate proceedings from the comfort of his room.

The court rejected Bello’s claim that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the criminal charges against him.

Justice Nwite emphasized that Bello must first make himself available for arraignment and have his plea taken before making any application or request.

Bello had argued on April 23 that the arrest warrant was unnecessary since his lead counsel, Abdulwahab Mohammed, accepted the service of the criminal charges on his behalf. These charges relate to an alleged N80 billion money laundering case brought against him by the Federal Government.
