Oshiomhole’s Divergent Positions On Death Penalty
The Senator representing the Edo North senatorial district, Adams Oshiomhole has spoken out against the Nigerian Senate’s passage of the 2024 NDLEA Act (Amendment) bill, which seeks to impose the death penalty on narcotics traffickers and consumers.
During the plenary session on May 9, 2024, Oshiomhole argued that the bill was passed too hastily and without sufficient consideration.
GWG.ng reports that Oshiomhole’s stance on death penalty for drug traficking which apparently fits in with his civil rights background, however, contrasts with his position as governor when he signed the death warrant on four death row inmates convicted for armed robbery and murder in 2013.
In a video from the Senate session, Oshiomhole emphasized that the bill is a matter of life and death and should not be decided by a simple “yea” or “nay” vote. He advocated for a more transparent and accountable process, suggesting that senators should cast their votes and have them identified with how they voted.

Oshiomhole’s criticism highlights the need for careful consideration and thoughtful debate on legislation that carries such severe consequences. The bill’s passage has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the measure as a necessary step to combat drug abuse, while others raise concerns about human rights and potential miscarriages of justice.
As the bill proposing death penalty for drug proceeds further legislative consideration, the criticism by Oshiomhole suggests the importance of thorough discussion and careful consideration on the issue given that it is a matter of life and death for possible violators of the provisions.
