President Bola Tinubu has caused a stir on social media after he wrote the National Assembly, urging them to amend the nation’s Constitution to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conduct local government elections.

This move by Tinubu has stirred mixed reactions across social media, while some appraised the move others criticized it.

GWG.ng gathered some reactions below:

@oyediranoke applauded, “Step in the right direction. Next, Change law for local govt to receive their allocation directly from federal govt, outlaw caretaker at LG, conduct LG election with general election, make LG chairman tenure 4 years like governor.”

@damola_ade77 said, “Now we are talking, this was how it used to be in 1999 and different parties won is every state.

The anti-democrat OBJ and some wicked governors changed the whole thing.

Back in 1999 to 2002, Local Government were doing roads and water projects.”

@lawalukman52 said, “Today best news. This will bring back the good old days at the grassroots. No more caretaker committee.”

@chidipan commented, “if that happens non indigene will start winning local government elections in lagos as they win in state and national assembly. Igbo man can be local government chairman in Ojo.”

@supoleigh said, “The same President Tinubu wey dey appoint Local Government Chairmen. Make una dey decieve una self there. INEC will conduct them ‘Baba Sope’. Shior.”

@kpajemu1 opined, “He wants absolute control abi? To destroy the influence of the state governors and use the corrupt INEC to rig him in again. The governors shouldn’t allow that. Nigeria is a federation. The states must enjoy the independence of their internal affairs.”

@peace_oracle said, “Very soon he will send a bill to be appointing traditional rulers in our community. No matter how rubber Akpabio is, this bill will go no where.”
