Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South-South has hailed the Oba of Benin, HRM, Oba Ewuare II over the return of 39 pieces of Benin artefacts from Sweden.

Orbih in a remarkable toast to the monarch’s astuteness in the diplomatic circuit praised Oba Ewuare II for his expertise in navigating the contours of international relations to restore the ancient heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

GWG.ng reports that Orbih particularly praised Oba Ewuare II for his steadfastness in forging a rapport with the Federal Government through the Benin Royal Museum project. Orbih’s commendation of the Benin Royal Family’s links with the Federal Government is against the background of the contrary move by Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State to build a state-of-the-art museum outside the suzerainty of the royal family.

Orbih said:

“I write to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Your Majesty and the  people of Benin Kingdom on the remarkable achievement of securing the return of 39 pieces of Benin Artefacts from Sweden. This historic milestone stands as a testament to Your Majesty’s unwavering dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of the great Benin kingdom against formidable odds.

“The restitution of these precious artefacts is not merely a retrieval of tangible objects but a cherished reclaiming of a rich and storied aspect of our history.  Your steadfast advocacy and diplomatic efforts have triumphed over attempts to divert and misrepresent the invaluable treasures of Benin Kingdom,” Chief Orbih said in apparent recognition of the monarch tapping into his prowess in international diplomacy to the benefit of his kingdom.

Apparently noting the challenges the monarch has faced recently, Orbih said:

“In the face of challenges and obstacles, your vision and perseverance have prevailed, reaffirming the resilience and cultural significance of Benin artefacts. This achievement is not only a victory for Benin Kingdom but also a triumph for cultural preservation and justice on a global scale.

“Your leadership in spearheading the federal government-backed Benin Royal Museum project is commendable, and underscores your commitment to safeguarding the cultural legacy of your people for generations to come. The recognition bestowed upon you by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria further solidifies your rightful custodianship of Benin artefacts.

“As we celebrate this momentous occasion, let us also reflect on the enduring importance of cultural heritage in shaping identities and fostering understanding among nations. Your dedication to this cause serves as an inspiration to all who strive to protect and honor their heritage in the face of adversity.

“May this historic achievement be a source of pride and unity for the people of Benin Kingdom, and may it pave the way for continued collaboration and mutual respect among nations.

‘Oba ghato kpere ise’.

With deepest respect and admiration,

‘Oba ghato kpere ise’.”
