Yul Edochie Slams Nollywood Producers for Perpetuating Negative Stereotypes

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has taken a swipe at Nollywood producers, expressing his discontent with the type of movies they produce. He specifically highlighted how these movies often feature Nigerians traveling abroad and acting foolishly, perpetuating negative stereotypes and selling the country short.

Edochie noted that foreign countries never produce movies that depict their citizens as foolish or inferior, instead, they often portray themselves as superheroes. He emphasized that the movie industry has the power to shape perceptions and influence culture, and it’s time for Nollywood producers to take responsibility and create more uplifting content.

“I wish our producers would stop making films where Nigerians travel abroad and act foolishly. We sell ourselves short with such storylines. Foreign countries never make movies that depict their citizens as foolish or inferior. Instead, they make themselves appear smarter and more superior. It’s intentional. They use movies to sell themselves as superheroes, while we use ours to run ourselves down,” Edochie said.

GWG.ng reports that Yul statement comes after veteran actor Kanayo Kanayo called out Nollywood filmmakers for creating low-quality content on YouTube, which he believes is ruining the foundation of the movie industry. Filmmaker Chinney Love also concurred, noting that the YouTube space has become toxic, and actors no longer want to work with producers, instead operating as one-person armies, forgetting that the movie industry is highly spiritual and requires collaboration.

As Yul aptly put it, “Any name you give your dog, that’s what everybody will call it.” It’s time for Nollywood producers to take a closer look at the stories they tell and the impact they have on their audience.
