As Christians Celebrate Pentecost

What is Pentecost?

Pentecost (from the Greek word “Pentecoste” meaning “50th day”) is the one of the most prominent feast days in the Christian calendar. May 19, marks the birth of the church. It is often referred to as the “birthday of the Church.”

It marks the day, nearly 2,000 years ago, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, fifty days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

According to Acts 1:4, while Jesus was with the apostles, he “commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.”

When the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus, descended upon the apostles, they were emboldened and  set forth to tell all people in Jerusalem of the Resurrection.

As they spoke in tounges given to them by the Holy Spirit, all nationalities present could understand them in their own mother tongue.

The scriptures record many came to Jesus on that day.

Acts 2:38-41: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Even as Christians mark ‘Pentecost’ today, there is need to be reminded that the reason for the coming of the holy spirit is to be effective withneses of Jesus, all over the world.

Acts 1:8: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
