‘Old Wine In New Wineskin’ – Nigerians Drag Ericsco Foods Over Rebranded Label
Eric Umeofia, who intimated Chioma Okoli for giving a negative review of his tomato paste, has set the internet abuzz after he rebranded his company name from Erisco Foods Processing Limited (EFPL) to Erisco Foods Limited (EFL).
GWG.ng recalls that last September, Chioma Okoli posted on Facebook that a tomato puree she’d just purchased for the first time contained an unhealthy amount of sugar. Less than a week later, its manufacturer, Eric Umeofia had her arrested and detained by Nigerian police.
The 39-year-old, who was pregnant with her fourth child at the time had been trapped in a legal battle ever since, accused of a cybercrime punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of seven million Nigerian naira (£3,526).
Following these revelations, human rights activists, social media influencers and netizens alike, were enraged against Eric’s actions which were classified as bullying. They dragged him on social media and sought Justice for Chioma.
Weeks down the lane, a new tomato paste, TomaGood, carrying Eric Umeofia’s new brand label, EFL, surfaced the internet, quickly sparking reactions.
@General_Oluchi known, a prominent social media influencer, who actively pursued justice for Chioma on social media, began the line of reactions.
She wrote “Has Erisco Foods Limited rebranded and nicodemously pushed this hideous brand into the market? “EFL” sounds like Erisco Foods Limited. The cover design, ingredients and location on “Toma Good” is identical to Nagiko Tomato Mix.
“They are both produced in Ikeja, Lagos.
I smell Eric Umeofia here! 😏
If it doesn’t belong to Eric, why did @NafdacAgency approve a product without an address?”
Fatima #ObiDatti replied, “Hahaha, you don catch them Same old wine in a new bottle.”

“It was a weekend of celebration and recognition as Erisco Foods Limited (EFL), the leading tomato paste manulacturer in Nigeria, neld its annual end of year party and staff recognition awards to reward its employees’ loyalty to the company for a perico of 10 years and above.”
David Hundeyin, a prominent online journalist said, “As predicted 2 months ago, following its self-inflicted PR disaster, Erisco Foods Limited, a.k.a. “EFL” has quietly changed the name of its tomato purée product.
“Imagine how much money and effort could have been saved by listening to actual professional advice.”
Hundeyin added, “Completely unprovoked, unnecessary, galactic overreaction to a harmless, perfectly legal – and above all obscure comment somewhere on Facebook ends up with CEO turning himself into a Ghostbusters supervillain on national TV, and a brand that now surely needs to change its name.
“Nobody is less open to new information and expert advice than a Nigerian man who thinks that he has some money, especially when he considers himself to be “self-made. Some women are really suffering in silence Sha.”
@Pur… said, “U dare buy and Review the product u bought with ur own money, Shegge promax awaits u. Tinubu’s led government no do reach like this, Erisco is a first class oppressór and ¡ntimidator.
@scad_offic said, “He preferred to bully the lady than to leverage the opportunity for a good PR. One-man businesses hardly take advice.”
@Daddy_Tweens said, “Wey dem for pay the Chioma lady for a very wise business correction and idea.”
