Former Minister Vows To Defy New National Anthem, Cites Right to Dissent

Former Minister of Education, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has taken a bold stance against the newly signed national anthem, declaring she will not adopt the change. In a post on her X handle, Ezekwesili asserted her right to dissent, calling the new anthem an “obnoxious law” that goes against her conscience and that of many Nigerians.

Ezekwesili stated she will continue to sing the old national anthem, which was replaced by the National Assembly’s rapid passage of the National Anthem Bill 2024. The new anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” was reinstated despite many Nigerians questioning its relevance to the country’s pressing issues, such as the economy.

GWG.ng reports that Ezekwesili’s stance has resonated with many, who see it as a courageous move in the face of a controversial decision.

Ezekwesili served as Minister of Solid Minerals and later as Minister of Education. Subsequently, she served as the vice president of the World Bank’s Africa region from May 2007 to May 2012; she was later replaced by Makhtar Diop. She is a senior fellow at Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs.
