Nigerians are expressing outrage and disbelief as President Bola Tinubu signs into law the reinstatement of the old national anthem, a move many see as a step backward in the country’s progress. The decision has sparked widespread criticism, with citizens questioning the government’s priorities amidst the current economic crisis.

On social media, a netizen poignantly wondered how national heroes like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chinua Achebe, and Gani Fawehinmi would feel if they were to rise from the grave and see the country’s regression. “Imagine them seeing that we’ve gone back to singing the old national anthem they dropped, with no electricity, rampant poverty, and squandermania from public officials, all while the Nigerian Police still operate with a colonial mentality,” the netizen wrote.

The reinstatement of the old national anthem has been met with disbelief, as many Nigerians feel it has no impact on the country’s pressing issues, such as the economy, poverty, and insecurity. The move is seen as a distraction from the real problems facing the nation, and citizens are demanding more action and less nostalgia from their leaders.

GWG.ng reports that former Minister of Education, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has taken a bold stance against the newly signed national anthem, declaring she will not adopt the change. In a post on her X handle, Ezekwesili asserted her right to dissent, calling the new anthem an “obnoxious law” that goes against her conscience and that of many Nigerians.
