Police beef security, urge Labour to shelve strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike, set to commence on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, following the tripartite committee’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage. The declaration was made at a joint press conference in Abuja on Friday, led by TUC President Festus Osifo and NLC leaders.

GWG.ng reports that the strike action comes after the expiration of an earlier ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May. Despite two offers from the government, including a proposed N60,000 minimum wage, the organised labour has rejected these proposals and pulled out of negotiations.

The labour unions are demanding a fair and living wage for Nigerian workers, and have called on all affiliates and members to mobilize for the strike. The nationwide action is expected to impact economic activities and services across the country, as workers protest the government’s handling of the minimum wage negotiations.
