Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after Al-Nassr’s defeat to rivals Al-Hilal in the King’s Cup final on Friday night, a match that saw three red cards.

The former Manchester United star collapsed to his knees as nine-man Al-Hilal triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Jeddah.

Despite setting a new Saudi Pro League scoring record with 35 goals, the 39-year-old Ronaldo was visibly emotional as he was consoled and led off the pitch, eventually sitting on the bench in tears.

Since joining Al-Nassr on a free transfer in January 2023, the Portugal captain has scored 58 goals in 64 games but finished this season without a trophy. His only silverware in Saudi Arabia remains last year’s Arab Club Champions Cup win.

During the penalty shootout, former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves missed the first penalty for Al-Hilal, followed by a miss from former United defender Alex Telles.

Both teams converted their next four penalties, including one by Ronaldo, but Al-Hilal’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved Al-Nassr’s final spot-kicks, securing a domestic double for Al-Hilal.

The game had an intense start with former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring for Al-Hilal in the seventh minute. Al-Nassr’s goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off in the 56th minute, but Ayman Yahya managed to score a late equalizer to push the match into extra time. Red cards were also issued to Al-Hilal’s Ali Al-Bulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly, adding to the drama of the final.
