Ex-DCP Abba Kyari Regains Freedom After 27 Months in Prison

Abba Kyari, the embattled former Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after spending 27 months behind bars.

Kyari, who once headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), was arrested on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for his alleged role in an international drug trafficking ring.

According to Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service in the FCT, Kyari was released on Friday, May 31, 2024, after meeting his bail conditions. “DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions and has since been released today,” Duza confirmed to Punch.

GWG.ng reports that Kyari’s release brings an end to his nearly two-and-a-half-year ordeal in prison, which began with his arrest and subsequent arraignment on drug-related charges. His case drew widespread attention due to his high-profile status as a former top cop and his alleged involvement in a major drug trafficking syndicate.

It was gathered that Abba Kyari was released on bail to enable him attend the burial of his mother. His freedom marks a significant development in a case that has captivated the nation’s attention for months.
