Nollywood actress Yewande Adekola Abiodun has faced criticism from social media users after lamenting the high price of Garri in a recent Instagram video. The movie star expressed shock and concern over the staple food’s skyrocketing cost, now selling at N80,000 per bag. She questioned how average Nigerians, particularly the poor, are surviving amidst the rising prices.

However, many social media users were quick to point out the irony of her complaint, given her alleged support for the current administration. Some users recalled how she and her colleagues voted for the President, implying that they should have expected the economic consequences. Others mocked her for only now realizing the struggles of the common man.

While some have sympathized with the actresses’ concerns, others have accused them of being out of touch with reality and only speaking out when it affects their own interests.

Read some netizens reactions below;

@Askbae Beauty Empire: “Is it not you people that campaigned for this regime? We never see anything.

@Ebi Live Love: “Stop complaining; you people voted for him

@Shegzy Love 6: Nah una dey campaign that’s Yoruba nah. So what next?

@Hype Frosh Jago: “No be una dey shout emilokan up and down. Ori gbogbo yin buru. Na una put us for this situation, eyin elesin gbogbo

@Hamak Peace: Na una wey be celebrity vote for ham”.

GWG.ng reports that this backlash echoes similar reactions to other celebrities’ complaints about the economy. Debbie Shokoya faced criticism in February when she lamented the high cost of living, and Mary Njoku was ridiculed for her shock at spending N100,000 on groceries during the festive season. Mercy Aigbe also faced criticism for her appeal to Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, about the country’s economic woes.

The debate underline the growing frustration among Nigerians over the rising cost of living and the perceived disconnect between the wealthy elite and the struggling masses.
