The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured that the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will not be disrupted by the nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday. This assurance was given by the Branch Controller (Ekiti), Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, in a letter to Principals and school heads in Ekiti State.

The letter, titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC,” stated that the examination will continue as scheduled, despite the strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). The examination, which began on April 30, will end on June 20, 2024.

According to Mrs. Lawson, WAEC shares the concerns of the unions and the general public but believes that students should not be disadvantaged by missing the examination. She noted that the examination is also taking place in other West African countries and Nigeria should not be an exception.

The letter urged school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to take note and make adequate arrangements for candidates to sit the exam. GWG.ng reports that the organized labor announced the commencement of the strike on Friday due to a breakdown in negotiations on the proposed new minimum wage.

Despite the strike, WAEC has assured that the examination will proceed as scheduled, and all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure its success.
