Aziegbemi’s Three-Dimensional Hamstring Setback For Edo PDP

The resignation last Thursday of Hon (Sir) Clem Aziegbemi from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was about one of the most outstanding developments in the raucous droplet infection now spreading through the ruling party in Edo State.

In his letter of resignation, Sir Clem said among others:

“The cause of this massive defection of members from the PDP is largely due to the conquest attitude of of the Partly Leadership that lacks inclusivity of members into appointment in the State which the Party loyalists worked for, yet there were abandoned for new entrants. The old PDP members, which I belong to have suffered a great deal in the hands of the Party Leadership and those in government.

“Both the Governor and the Party’s Candidate have failed to address these issues begging for attention . with this ugly development still persisting, it will be very difficult for the Party to win any Local Government in the September 21st, 2024 Governorship election in Edo State. Another disturbing issue is the seeming hijack of the PDP Governorship candidate by a gang of political jobbers, as against those of us who laboured for him to emerge as candidate of the Party.

However, beyond the mere incidence of the blood relationship with the chairman of the party in the state, that is Hon (Dr) Tony Aziegbemi, Sir Clem Aziegbemi’s decision to resign from the party also wore cast marks on other political appendages in the state.

While many in the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC and in the Legacy wing of the PDP were quick to identify Sir Clem as a direct brother to the PDP chairman, other checks were more refrained, defining their relationship as that of cousins.

However, the impact of an Aziegbemi resigning from the PDP at the time Tony remains chairman of the party in the state was not in any way lost on many as reflecting the degree of bedlam in the PDP in Edo State. That disorder has seen the serial resignations of some of the leading actors in the PDP all of whom have faulted the actions and inactions of Governor Godwin Obaseki. Remarkably, the PDP candidate in the forthcoming election, Barrister Asue Ighodalo has become a collateral victim.

Besides the incident of a relation abandoning the ship of the PDP, GWG.ng reports that Sir Clem Aziegbemi was also a spokesperson to the candidate. With his decision to resign, he also withdrew himself from that position.

Clem Aziegbemi was also a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Obaseki, an appointment he resigned from with his decision to dump the PDP last Thursday.

It is as such no surprise that the resignation of Sir Clem Aziegbemi from the PDP is being celebrated as a three-dimensional hamstring injury on the PDP in Edo State with his resignations from the PDP, as spokesperson to Ighodalo and as SSA to the governor.

It is a hamstring injury that will no doubt reduce the potential of the PDP in the field of play ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
