Labour Suspends Strike as FG Commits to Higher Minimum Wage

In a breakthrough development, Organised Labour has suspended its ongoing strike for five days, pending the release of a formal statement and the commencement of negotiations with the government.

This follows a marathon six-hour meeting between the Federal Government and labour leaders in Abuja.

According to sources, the government has expressed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to establishing a National Minimum Wage higher than the initial offer of N60,000. A joint agreement was reached, stating that the Tripartite Committee will convene daily for the next week to finalise an agreeable National Minimum Wage.

Furthermore, the government has assured that no worker will face victimisation for participating in the industrial action. The resolutions were signed by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, on behalf of the Federal Government.

This development marks a significant step forward in the negotiations, and labour leaders are expected to hold meetings with their organs to consider the new offer.

The suspension of the strike is a welcome relief for many Nigerians who have been affected by the industrial action.
