The Presidency has dismissed reports that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has proposed a new minimum wage of N105,000. In a statement released on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the reports as “false” and “contrary to the truth.”

The denial comes after reports emerged that Edun had presented a revised minimum wage template to President Tinubu during a meeting at the State House in Abuja on Thursday. The meeting, which also included the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, was part of ongoing negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

Sources had claimed that the proposed blueprint suggested a new minimum pay of N105,000 per month for Nigerian workers. However, the Presidency has now refuted this claim, stating that no such proposal has been made.

GWG.ng reports that a measure of authenticity was given to the report as it was first credited to an online news platform with close relationship to the Presidential Villa.

The tripartite committee on minimum wage, comprising the government, organized labor, and the organized private sector, is expected to meet today to discuss the revised proposal. The urgency of the matter reflects the government’s commitment to resolving the long-standing minimum wage dispute, which has caused negotiations to break down repeatedly.
