Reps Mum On Tinubu, Present Bill To Restrict President, Govs To Six-Year Single Term
By GWG National Assembly Editor
A group of 30 members of the House of Representatives have presented plans for a six-year single term for the president and governors as a panacea for the country’s development.
GWG.ng reports that the lawmakers presented the bill to the House Press Corp at a press conference in Abuja on Monday.
The lawmakers also presented as part of their proposal plans for all elections to be held on the same day.
The lawmakers who were led to the press conference by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere are also proposing that the presidency should be rotated among the six geopolitical zones.
Under their plans the president will have two vice-presidents with one from the South and the North.
Under the plan, the vice-president from the region where the president hails from would succeed the incumbent president should the presidency be vacant.
GWG.ng reports that the plans for rotation are also to be effected in the states along the three senatorial zones.
It was, however, not clear if the governors are to have three deputy governors to parallel the plan for the presidency.
The constitutional plan also provides for the conclusion of all pre-election petitions should be settled 30 days before the election and also for all post-election petitions to be settled before the inauguration of the office holder.
Also part of the proposal is a seven year prison sentence for electoral officers who tamper with electronic results.
GWG.ng reports that the bills have passed through first reading.
The lawmakers were, however, mum as to how it would affect incumbent office holders including President Bola Tinubu.
