Government Announces 3 Weeks Of Power Interruption
By Gideon Ayeni
Ghana is currently grappling with interruptions in power supply due to a significant reduction in gas imports from Nigeria, as disclosed by the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The disruption, which commenced on 12 June 2024, has affected various regions across the country, causing widespread inconvenience.
The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) attributed the reduction to essential maintenance activities being conducted by a key gas supplier in Nigeria. These maintenance works are anticipated to extend over a three-week period, culminating in a substantial dip in the overall power generation capacity within Ghana.
To mitigate the impact of this shortfall, GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that they are actively collaborating with stakeholders within the power sector to optimize available resources. Their goal is to minimize the adverse effects of the reduced gas supply on consumers and maintain as stable a power supply as possible during this period.
See memo below ;
Both organizations expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and committed to keeping the public informed about any further developments.
About GRIDCo and ECG:
GRIDCo, the backbone of power delivery in Ghana, is responsible for the transmission of electricity across the country. ECG, on the other hand, manages the distribution of electricity to end-users. Both entities play crucial roles in ensuring that Ghanaians have access to reliable electricity, and they continue to work together to address the challenges posed by this temporary disruption in gas supply.
