MultiChoice Reverses Price Hikes As One Million Nigerian Customers Exit

MultiChoice, the operator of DStv and GOtv, has reversed price increases following a court ruling that deemed them unjustifiable.

This decision comes after substantial customer backlash, particularly in Nigeria, where over a million subscribers canceled their services.

Initially, MultiChoice attributed the price hikes to economic factors such as inflation and currency devaluation.

However, the increases led to widespread dissatisfaction and a wave of cancellations.

The price rollback has brought much-needed relief to DStv and GOtv customers. As of Sunday, June 16, 2024, the adjusted prices are reflected on the company’s apps.

DStv subscribers will now pay N29,500 instead of N37,000 for the Premium package. Compact Plus package subscribers will pay N19,800 instead of N25,000. Compact Bouquet subscribers will revert to N12,500 from N15,700, while Confam package subscribers will pay N7,400 instead of N9,300 per month. Yanga package subscribers will now pay N4,200 instead of the proposed N5,100, and Padi subscribers will return to the previous rate of N2,950 instead of N3,600.

GOtv subscribers will also benefit from the rollback. The Super Plus package is now N12,500 instead of N15,700, GOtv Super users will pay N7,600, down from N9,600, GOtv Max subscribers will pay N5,700, GOtv Joli subscribers will pay N3,950, and GOtv Jinja subscribers will revert to N2,700.

Despite the court’s mandate for a month of free service for subscribers, MultiChoice’s position on this requirement remains uncertain. The company plans to appeal the ruling, citing concerns about its business model.

Overall, the price rollback is expected to alleviate the financial strain on customers during these challenging economic times. Whether MultiChoice will comply with the court’s additional ruling on providing a free month of service is yet to be determined.
