AFN Lists Amusan, Brume, Enekwechi, Others For African Athletics Championships

Nigeria’s team for the 2024 Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Douala is set to storm Douala, Cameroon for the the tournament.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has selected top athletes with the aim of leading the medals table at the championships, which will take place from June 21 to June 26.

World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, spoke with reporters after retaining her title at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. She expressed the team’s determination to showcase their skills in Douala, emphasizing the Nigerian spirit of resilience and achievement.

Newly crowned 100m champion, Favour Ofili, shared her confidence in Nigeria’s ability to dominate the medals table in Douala.

Similarly, long jumper Ese Brume promised to perform her best to ensure a strong finish for Nigeria.

Record-chasing athletes Adesina and Amusan are among the prominent names in Nigeria’s 40-member team for the 23rd African Athletics Championships in Douala.

 Adesina aims to become the first Nigerian woman to win the high jump event after previous silver medals by Nneka Ukuh and Doreen Amata.

 She will likely face tough competition from Ghana’s Rose Yeboah, the reigning African Games and defending African Championships champion.

Amusan, the defending champion in the 100m hurdles, is striving for a third consecutive title, having previously won in 2018 and 2022. A victory would make her the third Nigerian and African woman to achieve this feat, following Maria Usifo and Glory Alozie.

Other notable sprinters in the men’s category include Ushoritse Itshekiri, Kanyinsola Ajayi, and Godson Oghenebrume. The men aim to return Nigeria to the 100m podium, a position last achieved by Olusoji Fasuba in 2008.

For the women, sprinters Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Tima Godbless will seek Nigeria’s first title since Blessing Okagbare’s championship record in 2014.

In the 400m, reigning African Games champion Chidi Okezie, along with teenage sensation Samuel Ogazi and Dubem Amene, will strive to bring Nigeria back to the podium as African champions. Okezie, who made history by becoming the second Nigerian to win the 400m title at the African Games, is aiming to repeat this achievement.

For the women, Ella Onojuvwevwo will lead Esther Joseph and Patience George in their quest for gold, a title last won by Folasade Abugan in 2014.

Returning athletes aiming for a hat-trick of titles include Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Chioma Onyekwere. Additionally, Obiageri Amaechi and Anumba Ashley are listed to compete, enhancing Nigeria’s chances of success in Douala.
