Expert Reveals Simple Ways to Prevent Cholera

As cholera continues to ravage Nigeria and other parts of the world, family doctors are emphasizing that the disease is not only deadly but also preventable and treatable if necessary measures are taken. In separate interviews in Ibadan, the doctors stressed the importance of prompt treatment, proper hygiene, and government intervention in controlling the spread of cholera.

According to Dr. Francis Sanwo, Medical Director of Our Lady of Apostle Catholic Hospital, cholera is easily treatable if handled promptly. He noted that the majority of people can be treated successfully with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), and rapid access to treatment is essential during an outbreak. He also emphasized the importance of provision of safe water and sanitation, surveillance, and community engagement in preventing and controlling the transmission of cholera.

Dr. Olufemi Okedare, Oyo State Chairman of the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), explained that cholera is a bacterial disease that contaminates food or water, leading to gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and vomiting. He stressed that cholera is preventable by providing clean potable water, practicing good hygiene, and seeking prompt treatment when infected.

Both doctors highlighted the importance of:

• Washing hands frequently with soap and water
• Drinking safe water, including bottled or boiled water
• Eating completely cooked and hot food
• Avoiding street vendor food
• Taking fruits and vegetables that can be peeled personally
• Community engagement and cultural hygiene practices
• Prompt treatment with ORS and intravenous fluids
• Government intervention and emergency response during epidemics

By taking these measures, the spread of cholera can be controlled, and deaths can be reduced. It is essential for governments, communities, families, and individuals to work together to prevent and treat cholera.
