Yoruba Split Over Onanuga’s Affection For Lebanese, Indians Over Ndigbo

Bayo Onanuga was on Monday morning trending in two different dimensions as old posts relating to him swarmed the social media raising divisions among the Yoruba about one of President Bola Tinubu’s most controversial image makers.

GWG.ng had earlier reported the trend that arose from an old publication of The News then headed by Onanuga which published details of the alleged business relationship between the Chagoury brothers and deceased Nigerian leader, General Sani Abacha.

Following reactions on the trend, X users subsequently dug up an old tweet in which Bayo Onanuga was quoted in 2016 as saying that he was looking forward to the day when a Lebanese or an Indian would become a Local Government chairman of the Yourba heartland in Lagos.

The old tweet immediately brought to mind the reprimand by Bayo Onanuga after the 2023 election when he warned the Igbo not to ever again aspire to shove the Yoruba aside in the politics of Lagos State

The warning arose from the audacious challenge to the second term aspiration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu by the Labour Party governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. GWG.ng reports that Rhodes-Vivour who claims lineage to a prominent Lagos family through his father was, however, born of an Igbo mother.

His aspiration was believed to have mobilized the Igbo in Lagos towards the Labour Party and for once threatened the grip of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Alausa.

The discovery of the old tweet by Onanuga championing the emergence of Lebanese and Indians on the political landscape in Lagos as against his recent admonitions against the Igbo has inevitably generated new buzz around the presidential aide on social media.

Remarkably, the reference to Bayo Onanuga’s love for the Lebanese, Indians and Ghanaians was brought to twitter by former broadcaster and OAP Ife Salako who is now the spokesperson of the Labour Party in Lagos.

While some fellow Yoruba supported her in questioning of the moral fortitude of Bayo Onanuga, others questioned the genuineness of any tie of Ife Salako to the Yoruba race as they robustly defended the presidential adviser.

GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions:

OlomuAperan @Olomu_Aperan_

Because those who he mentioned doesn’t call us Ofemmanu, dirty, lazy or say “they have bought their whole land”, Lagos is a slum, Lagos is smelling. They are beautiful soul and well trained people are one of the actual developers of Lagos with their multi-billion $ investments.

Ife Salako @ifesalakooffice

Is this from your head or anus? Do you know how Indians and Lebanesse are killing Nigerians working for them in Lagos? Why did you people decide to become voluntary slaves to APC?

Olaleye Emmanuel Akinola( Eyan Akanbi GCFR) @eakinola23

Bayo Onanuga has Yoruba land intrest at heart, we kwon where your intrest is.

Ife Salako @ifesalakooffice

Yet he wants to sell you to Lebanesse that are already killing your people in Lagos? Imagine for a second what they’d do to your bigot a$$ when they take over Lagos. I know you have lost the capacity to imagine though but just try cos you can’t have sense and be saying this rubbish

Olaleye Emmanuel Akinola( Eyan Akanbi GCFR) @eakinola23

It is unfortunate that we didn’t have these platforms during the NADECO years. I remember vividly that these men said all kinds of unprintable things about Nigeria on Radio Kudirat.

Today they are lovers of Nigeria because they are in power.

Daniel Adebanjo @DanielAdebanjo3

All these people have terrible receipts, i wonder when their love and patriotism started for Nigeria.

Eguono E @eguonoejenobor

The weaponisation of poverty in Nigeria. Poor education leads to limited opportunities leads to life of subsistence or below average financially which leads to hunger and desperation which is recipe for all societal ills including bigotry.

Yet the people don’t want saving.

Omo-Ogegbo-1💪🐎💪. Ara-Eko No Be Omo-Eko👻 @Ogeshinikese

I disagree with Bayo Onanuga on that…..

God forbid such situations

ALOHA 3 @AlphaOne692106

Lebanese oh, one of the most heartless and ruthless business people anywhere in the world 😅😅😅
