Lagos Landlord's biblical curse on tenant

A bizarre yet laughter-filled moment surfaced recently when a Lagos landlord was caught on video raining curses on his tenants for what he deemed poor maintenance of his property.

The video, shared by @NoNonsensezone on X (formerly Twitter), shows the unnamed Yoruba man standing in front of his house, fervently cursing his tenants while referencing Bible scriptures and speaking in tongues.

The landlord, seemingly unaware that he was being filmed, appeared to be on a call with one of his tenants as he voiced his frustrations. The video quickly gained traction, generating a heated debate in the comments section.

The poster’s identification of the tenants as Igbo added fuel to the fire, accusing them of being notorious for damaging properties and then moving back to their villages without paying rent.

The incident ignited a tribal debate, with users from different backgrounds sharing their experiences and opinions:

@bultang007 commented, “Oga, Yoruba people dey gree pay rent, lol 😂😂 I’m a landlord in Ilasa oo, I’ve seen hell with Yoruba tenants, dirty set of people.”

@chukwudiokparaa shared, “We had Igbo tenants once, a family of five. The mother sold Akpu, and the father sold stockfish. Paying rent was a problem, and the house always smelled. They kept bringing in more relatives into their two-room space.”

@NoNonsensezone stated, “They will frustrate their landlord until he gives up on the house or just sends them packing without them paying a dime for years. It’s the disrespect and disregard for me. Yorubas need to stop taking bullshit, enough.”

@Adegslink added, “When most Yoruba landlords are lazy and greedy. How can you rent a house for a million naira and expect tenants not to owe or frustrate you? Many Yoruba men can’t maintain a 1m rent, but prefer to rent to Igbos, and after two years, the problems begin.”

@Bluenexter remarked, “If the Igbos start sharing similar toxic experiences they’ve endured renting to Yoruba in Lagos, you won’t have the stomach to take it. Both Igbos and Yoruba have had terrible tenants, but you want to use Yoruba issues to chase clout.”

@IwualaMaurice criticized the post, “This is trash. Do you want to say there aren’t silly Yoruba or Hausa or any tribe that does such? Why tag it like it’s only Igbos? Learn to embrace peace.”

@kaydjango observed, “They do it to frustrate the landlords, bro.”

@Abumaiqo shared a strategy, “One silent treatment that worked for me in Kaduna was to get a man with leprosy to touch everything in the house. The tenants moved out the same day.”

@Manlike_ED questioned, “Thought the Igbos own all the houses in Lagos and the South West? 🙃”

@Ikepicano mocked, “Mumu people, whose fathers are in Ilorin, talk about rent. Even those whose grandfathers never molded one block are talking about renting houses to people.”

@WilverZaddy challenged, “How many of you can afford the apartments that an Igbo man lives in Lagos? Mumu dey smell.”

@AdeJesuRe theorized, “Strategically, it is a means of Igbos extracting wealth from Yoruba people. Instead of paying rent, they hoard the money as capital for trading. I’ve heard many horror stories. Yet, when Yoruba stop renting to them, they cry bigotry.”

The video and ensuing comments highlight the deep-seated tensions and stereotypes between different ethnic groups in Nigeria, revealing the complex and often contentious nature of landlord-tenant relationships in Lagos.
