Outrage as Tems wins best gospel award

An outrage has been sparked on social media after singer, Temilade Openiyi’ popularly called Tems, won the Best Gospel/Inspirational award at the just-concluded 2024 Black Entertainment Television (BET), Awards.

According to reports, Tems’ ‘Me & U’ beat other gospel stars such as Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, Maverick City Music, and others to land the Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational prize held at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on Monday.

The award of the Best Gospel song award to Tems came as a shocker for netizens across social media because the artiste is mostly associated with secular music.

GWG.ng observed that the footage from ‘Me and You’, revealed sexually provocative dressing and dancing, raising more questions as to what really qualified the song to be classified as a gospel song as there is no trace of ‘Jesus’ which is at the centre of the Christian faith.

A review posted by controversial social media influencer, Daniel Rhega, has since sparked reactions on X and Facebook.

He tweeted, “Tems winning a gospel award is a møckery to the Christian community.”

@Iamkolo asked a pertinent question, “But what is a gospel artiste doing in BET awards?”

@2wenty24 commented, “This is a system…they know the gospel they talking about..it’s clearly not about Jesus. Her “only me and you” video have you interpreted it? She spread their kind of gospel there.”

I’m terror to your adversaries reacted, “It’s like they just look for a category and fix her name since she didn’t win the categories she suppose to be in… Oh well the church is always welcoming, we don’t discriminate, even if it’s Rick Ross they give best gospel artiste award.”
