Outrage was on Thursday boiling over following the report of the killing of Nigerian soldiers by armed bandits on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

The condemnation of the act was in some quarters being fueled with calls for violent retaliation against the perpetrators of the outrageous act.

Some netizens have called for the military to unleash violence on entire villages along the expressway, drawing parallels to previous instances of military action in other regions such as Okuama community and the closure of BANEX plaza. Others have questioned why the military hierarchy and government officials have not issued stronger statements or ordered reprisal attacks.

Read some netizens’ reactions to the killing of the Nigerian soldiers;

@enyinwa: Not in southeast though, it happened where it is normal so no reprisals, may their souls rest-on🙏🙏

@christogonus: If it happened in the SE or SS, the whole villages along that expressway will be wiped out.Your one Nigeria my foot

@billy_chapman: Sad one. The government of the day chooses not to do the needful to end these incessant killings of young security men and civilians.

@sugarstorms: One part of my heart grieves for the fallen soldiers while the other part is thankful that it didn’t happen in SE or SS

aennanyerugo: Why is the Military hierarchy not issuing statements and reprisal threats?Why is the President not ordering the Army to go for the criminals?Why is the Chief of Army Staff not ordering complete leveling of the area? Or are the lives of d soldiers in that area not important

Worryingly, some comments have taken on an ethnic and regional tone, with users making generalizations and stereotypical remarks about specific groups. This has raised concerns about the spread of hate speech and the potential for further division and violence.

As the nation continues to grapple with the fallout of this tragic incident of the killing Nigerian soldiers, it’s essential to prioritize peace and seek justice through legal and peaceful means, rather than resorting to hate speech and calls for violence.
