FG Announces Duty-Free Import Window for Essential Food Items

Published

on

In a move to address food security and affordability, the Federal Government has suspended duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of select food items through land and sea borders. The exempted food items include maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.

According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, a 150-day duty-free import window has been introduced to facilitate the influx of these essential food commodities. To ensure affordability, imported food commodities will be subjected to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP).

The government has prioritized food safety, and the imported food items will meet strict standards to guarantee consumer safety. In addition to private sector imports, the Federal Government will also import 250,000 metric tons of wheat and 250,000 metric tons of maize.

These imported food commodities, in their semi-processed state, will be supplied to small-scale processors and millers across the country, supporting local food production and distribution.

This move is expected to alleviate food insecurity, promote affordability, and support the growth of the agricultural sector.
