Organized Labour Issues Final Ultimatum to Govt, Sets Date For Indefinite Strike

The Abia State chapter of Organized Labour has given the state government a final seven-day ultimatum to meet their demands, including the payment of the outstanding N30,000 minimum wage and N35,000 palliative allowance. If their demands are not met, workers in the state will embark on an indefinite strike beginning July 15, 2024.

In a letter dated July 8, 2024, and signed by Okoro Ogbonnaya, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Enogwe Ihechi, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), organized labour in Abia stated that the decision to issue the ultimatum was reached after a general meeting on July 8.

According to the unions, the 14-day ultimatum issued earlier had elapsed without any attempt by the government to engage in dialogue or negotiate a resolution to their demands.

The letter reads in part: “Organized labour hereby issues this final seven (7) days ultimatum with effect from the day of receipt of this letter and states unequivocally, that at the expiration of this ultimatum, on Sunday 00hr, there shall be no further communication with the government. Rather, the entire workforce of Abia State will proceed on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, 15th July, 2024.”

This threat of strike action comes despite Governor Alex Otti’s assurances to implement new wages as soon as the Federal government reaches an agreement with organized labour.

The workers are demanding the payment of the outstanding minimum wage and palliative allowance, and have aligned themselves with the national leadership’s directive to embark on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.

The strike action, if it goes ahead, will likely have significant implications for the state’s public sector, with workers in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and transportation, downing tools. The Abia Government has been urged to take immediate action to address the demands of organized Labour and avoid a prolonged strike that could have far-reaching consequences for the state.
